ABOUT
US
Village Pottery and Art Studio, owned and operated by Les and Joanne Olson, began it's first class in September 1996. Since then, it has brought countless hours of instruction and pleasure to very many children and adults, all with the shared interest to "experience clay". With programs ranging from adult and children's classes to special groups as well as elective programs for the area's schools, the studio has become a very busy and exciting center in the community for exploring the ancient world of pottery. Les Olson originally from western Canada, and a graduate of Calgary's Alberta College of Art, with a 4 year advertising major, has been an active potter for 23 years and has both produced and taught pottery in Markham for the past 16 years. Joanne Olson, hailing from Trinidad in the West Indies, moving to Britain, and then living and travelling much of the far east, brings a different sense of form, function and interest to the studio. She specializes in both hand building and throwing, and teaching children's and adult hand building programs in the studio. Her main love is coiling large urns up to 25 inches in height. During each year, both Joanne and Les donate work to various charities including the Markham Stouffville Hospital Fund Raising Gala, the Markhaven Gala, Evergreen Hospice, Markham Museum, United Way and other organizations.In
addition to keeping the studio classes busy and interesting, both are
working to expand their own exhibitions and sales of their work. |
